Major Employers Sector Analysis: Utilities Sector

This is our continuing coverage on different employers / sectors that are hiring. This week, we would like to share some utilities companies around the world that are major employers.

Utilities sector continues their hiring spree despite of the recession, partly because part of the funding from stimulus have been allocated to utilities sector; and another reason is this sector needs to invest in resources for upgrades to make their infrastructure for environmental friendly. The utilities sectors are also characterised with consistency in revenue even in recession (well, you and I still have to pay the bills); and many are semi-government sectors as well.

This week, let’s take a look of several large utilities companies around the world:

E.ON (Germany / Europe/ Global)

E.ON AG (E.ON) is a power and gas company. The Company’s operations are organized into separate market units. The Central Europe market unit focuses on the Company’s electricity business and the downstream gas business in central Europe. Pan-European Gas market unit operates its upstream and downstream gas business, and also holds interests principally in the energy business in Europe outside of Germany.

The U.K market unit includes the energy business in the United Kingdom. The Nordic market unit is focused on the energy business in Northern Europe. The U.S Midwest market unit involves the regulated energy market in the United States, state of Kentucky. The Company’s Energy Trading market unit combines its European trading activities for electricity, gas, oil and carbon dioxide allowances. The Company’s New Markets segment consists of the activities of climate and renewables in Italy and Russia market units, as well as the Spain market unit.

Exelon Corporation (USA)

Exelon Corporation (Exelon) is a utility services holding company. It operates through its principal subsidiaries: Exelon Generation Company, LLC (Generation), Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd) and PECO Energy Company (PECO). Generation’s business consists of its owned and contracted electric generating facilities, its wholesale energy marketing operations and its retail supply operations. ComEd’s energy delivery business consists of the purchase and regulated retail sale of electricity, and the provision of transmission and distribution services to retail customers in northern Illinois.

PECO’s energy delivery business consists of the purchase and regulated retail sale of electricity and the provision of transmission and distribution services to retail customers in south-eastern Pennsylvania, as well as the purchase and regulated retail sale of natural gas and the provision of distribution services to retail customers in the Pennsylvania counties surrounding Philadelphia.

Entergy Corporation (USA)

Entergy Corporation (Entergy) is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail electric distribution operations. It owns and operates power plants with approximately 30,000 megawatt of aggregate electric generating capacity.

The Company is also a nuclear power generator in the United States. The Company operates in two business segments: Utility and Non-Utility Nuclear. In addition to its two primary, reportable, operating segments, Entergy also operates the non-nuclear wholesale assets business.

The non-nuclear wholesale assets business sells to wholesale customers the electric power produced by power plants that it owns while it focuses on improving performance and exploring sales or restructuring opportunities for its power plants.
